Craig Esherick, JD, is an assistant professor in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism at George Mason University. He teaches sport management and sport governance and is the internship coordinator. Esherick was a sport management instructor at New York University before his tenure started at GMU. He also worked for America Online and CBS College Sports prior to moving back into the world of higher education as a professor. Esherick was a scholarship basketball player at Georgetown University, where he received an undergraduate degree in finance and a law degree. After graduating from law school and passing the DC Bar, Esherick caught the coaching bug. He was an assistant basketball coach at his alma mater under Hall of Fame Coach John Thompson for 17 and a half years. When Thompson resigned in the middle of the 1999 season, Esherick took over as the head coach and went on to compile a record of 103-74 in that position. His teams were invited to the postseason every year but one and he also led the Hoyas to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in the 2001 season. While Esherick was an assistant coach, he served as a scout and the assistant coach for the US men’s basketball Olympic Team from 1987 to 1988 (Seoul Games), helping the US earn a bronze medal in the Summer Games. Esherick also works with the US Department of State and Sports United on a three-year sport diplomacy cooperative agreement. This grant has enabled athletes and coaches from countries all over the world to experience sport in the United States, learning how the US has integrated competitive sports with high school and college educational institutions. Esherick continues to work as a color commentator during the college basketball season for Mid Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). He has co-authored another textbook called Fundamentals of Sport Management (Human Kinetics) and is currently working on a book about sport coaching (Jones Bartlett).
