A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Dr.Richard Leonard earned his bachelors degree in accounting from Robert Morris College. He received an MBA in management from Tampa College and his doctorate in administration and management from Walden University. He has served as a regional tournament director and an independent summer camp entrepreneur, and has authored numerous national articles on sports administration. He is U.S. Volleyball CAP Level II certified and U.S. Volleyball Critical Thinking Seminar certified. He has also achieved his ACEP certification.

In January 2005, Leonard joined the faculty at Flagler College in Tallahassee, FL. The previous 5 1/2 years, he served as a professor of business for the American InterContinental University in Atlanta. He has taught classes in entrepreneurship, all levels of management, and a range of marketing classes. His adjunct teaching experience in business dates back to 1989.

From 1998-2004, Leonard was the head women's volleyball coach at Georgia State University, and during that six-year period he led the Lady Panthers to its most successful run in school history. Georgia State was 144-69 under the direction of Leonard, giving him a .676 winning percentage, the best in school history. For his efforts, Leonard was named Conference Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001, and 2003.

Prior to Georgia State, Leonard spent four seasons as the associate head coach at St. Louis University. During his tenure at Saint Louis University, the Billikens developed into one of the best volleyball program in the Midwest. They compiled a 91-59 mark, including a 29-10 record and a trip to the postseason National Invitational Tournament.

Leonard was a member and player in the United States Volleyball Association from 1980 to 1997 and was AA rated. He has been on four USVB regional championship teams and seven USVB semifinalist and finalist squads. During his playing career, his teams won more than 125 tournaments and league championships.
